015 | Flora :: Santorini, Greece, 2013

We went to Santorini to see the postcard sunrise of Oia, but it was not meant to be. Zeus, who controls the clouds among other things, was not in the best mood that weekend.

The next morning I headed down to the shore to catch a day tour to a nearby island. It was an impromptu decision and I planned it poorly. I didn’t realize part of the tour involves swimming, so I didn’t bring a bathing suit. I also didn’t realize half the tour involved hiking, so I wore a pair of sandals. Most devastating of all, I didn’t realize how far it was to walk from the the top of the mountain to the port, and the funicular would cost me a coin that I did not have. Thankfully I met a nice couple from Texas who generously sponsored my ride, and shared with me all their travel stories.

It wasn’t quite tourist season yet, the only restaurant on the island was closed, and we saw more cats than people. Although it was essentially what the tour guide told us to do, I thought it somewhat creepy of us tourists walking around this quiet village taking photos of people’s houses. I liked the simplicity of this place though, the houses were all painted white with blue accents, no one building stood out from any other, but every house had their own unique flair, like the one in this photo.

As much as I like the breathtaking beauty of palaces and mountains, it’s these photos of the little things that bring back the fondest memories.
