Same same, but different

Africa, Eastern Europe, or Burning Man?

You know life is good when your biggest dilemma is making a decision between these three for your second big trip of the year.

Two of my favorite reads last year were Madeleine Albright’s Prague Winter and Milan Kundera’s Unbearable Lightness of Being. So when Prague, Budapest, and Vienna were among the destinations to my Iceland travel crew’s next trip, I thought nothing could beat that itinerary.

Then as I finally acclimated to the festival obsessed culture of San Francisco, it seemed like a much coveted ticket to Burning Man should not be passed on lightly.

My sister’s leaving for Africa next week to volunteer as a mentor for a school in Rwanda. Of course, my first reaction was “ooh, maybe I can come meet you in Kigali and we can head over to Tanzania for a safari!”

Sometimes I think about the decisions that were made and the ones that seemed to have been made for me, and am thankful for everything that happened that led me to pack a suitcase and get on the road. I can’t imagine what I would be like without having spent so much time exploring, meeting people who are very much not like me, experiencing cultures I’ve never encountered. It’s been such a privilege to lead a nomadic life, and even if in the future I’m no longer jet setting every other month, I hope to never forget what it’s like to be a vagabond.
