031 | Music :: Memphis, USA, 2008

My Australian friend Lucy came to do her first tour of the USA and the places she picked were NYC, Chicago, and Tennessee. Really? Not San Francisco? New Orleans? Portland? Tennessee? Yes, she firmly replied. So I packed my bags and joined her.

Despite my skepticism, it was an amazing trip! After spending the weekend in Chicago for our other friend’s wedding, we left on the Greyhound and headed to Memphis. It was my first time on the Greyhound and I found the experience quite uneventful and not scary at all. We visited Graceland, and were surprised to find that people were still coming to pay their respects and singing at his memorial. We hopped on two random stranger’s car to do a tour of Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Did you know that the world famous whiskey is made in a town that doesn’t allow the sale of alcohol? We visited the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, and even though at the time I didn’t like the music, I was pretty impressed by the building. We took a tour of Gibson’s guitar factory, which was quite informative and inspired me to sing.

Most fun of all, I recorded an Elvis song at Sun Studios, where Elvis, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, and other famous people recorded some of their most famous albums. I have sadly lost the CD the song was recorded on, but at least I have this one picture to prove that I had shared the same space with legends.
