    053 | Strangers :: Mandalay, Myanmar, 2014

    Myanmar has been in the news lately for the genocide of the Rohingya people. When I visited in 2014, I had heard similar news, but on a much smaller scale. I loved the country’s natural beauty, magnificent temples, and friendly people, and it’s heartbreaking to listen to the horrifying stories today and associate them with…

    052 | Strangers :: Bali, Indonesia, 2013

    Our Bali cooking class started with a tour of the Ubud country side, so we could see for ourselves where our food came from. It was harvest season, and farmers were busy cutting down the ripened rice stalks in the field. This lovely lady saw me point the camera at her, and flashed the brightest…

    Swayambhu Temple stood atop a hill in Kathmandu Valley overlooking the city. According to legends, the valley had been filled with water once upon a time, until a lotus flower appeared in the middle of the lake, which gave the temple its Sanskrit name — self created.  The woman stood next to one of the…

    Found at a decrepit temple across from the hostel we were staying at a few miles from the Everest Base Camp. This sheep was stationed at the door and eyed us suspiciously. Given its impressive horns, we were actually quite intimidated and weren’t sure if we were supposed to go in! Good job guard sheep.

    043 | Animals :: Sa Pa, Vietnam, 2013

    Found this water buffalo (and his friend) blocking our hiking path one foggy morning in Sa Pa, Vietnam. We couldn’t get around them, or push past them, so ended up walking through the forest to get back on the path instead.

    Found this super fluffy Tibetan mastiff on our way to Everest and had to stop for a photo op. Then the guy offered up the mountain goat for me to hold and of course I accepted! While we are at it, why don’t we strike a roaring pose? 😛

    035 | Words :: Shanghai, China, 2013

    Like any major metropolitan city, Shanghai has its dark side. One evening after dinner at a fancy restaurant on the Bund, a stroll led us to a neighborhood marked for eviction. The street was quiet. The fluorescent street light shines bleakly on the walls, painted and repainted with layers of whitewash. The power lines hung…

    028 | Music :: Koh Tao, Thailand, 2012

    I was introduced to the diving world by a friend, who was surprised that it wasn’t already an item on my bucket list. I thought about it and decided that he’s right, and booked a trip to Koh Tao during my sabbatical. Koh Tao is a tiny island off the coast of Thailand, just north…

     I arrived in the United States in 1994. That was the year Forest Gump hit the movie theater, Diana divorced Charles, Netscape released a browser, and the US hosted its first and ever World Cup. I have been watching World Cup since I was a young babe. Even though China as a country sucks…
